What is the difference between glandular-based and lifestyle-based endocrine disorders?
Glandular-based endocrine disorders arise from diseased endocrine glands. Lifestyle-based endocrine disorders occur in perfectly healthy glands that are responding to poor nutrition and lifestyle habits. For example, Addisons disease in an auto-immune destruction of the adrenal glands. This is a glandular based disorder that requires cortisol hormone replacement therapy. Burned-out adrenal glands started off as healthy glands but with continued stress and the over secretion of cortisol, end up no longer being able to produce enough cortisol to meet the continuing stresses that are occurring. Burned-out adrenals are an example of a lifestyle based endocrine disorder. Instead of hormone replacement therapy, changes need to be made in lifestyle habits to stop the demand for more cortisol production. Only then can the adrenal glands rest and heal to make more cortisol again. You can completely reverse all lifestyle based endocrine disorders by improving your habits. But if you do not change your habits real diseases can occur and you will die sooner.
